Seminar on “Bullying and Related Variables Among Musicians” Held
A seminar titled “Bullying and Related Variables Among Musicians” was delivered by Prof. Dr. Serpil UMUZDAŞ with the participation of academic staff and students. During the seminar, the effects of hierarchical structures in the field of music, intense competition, and the pressure of artistic perfectionism on musicians’ mental health were discussed in light of scientific findings.
The seminar addressed how vertical hierarchies extending from conservatory education to professional orchestras and academic positions, as well as economic insecurity and competition within the sector, may contribute to workplace bullying and mobbing behaviors.
Differences in bullying experiences according to gender, seniority, musical genre, and modes of performance were also examined, together with risk factors particularly affecting young academics, students, and freelance musicians.
The psychosomatic consequences of systematic pressure on musicians—including Music Performance Anxiety (MPA), chronic burnout, loss of self-esteem, professional alienation, and musculoskeletal disorders—were illustrated through findings from scientific research.
